Challenges in technology to meet enterprise needs in 2014

One of our biggest challenges, spanning across all technologies, is the ability to implement technology and business process changes at a much faster pace. We need to simplify and streamline the contracting and licensing processes with our technology partners. We need open solutions from our partners so the integration between cloud services or software solutions does not require us to build custom point-to-point linkages. And, we need to provide easy access and insights from the volumes of information we have locked inside our enterprise applications, data warehouses and products.

Solutions that would make my job easier

Making hybrid cloud a reality including having an easy and effective way to manage, secure and effectively utilize our entire compute environment (on private and public cloud) would make my job easier. We are getting closer, but there are still gaps to be filled in this space. Keeping us all awake at night are the cyber wars that continue to ratchet up in volume and sophistication. This risk threatens every business regardless of your industry and  technology alone will not solve the problem. Today we are sharing more intelligence across businesses and government but we are each monitoring and protecting our environments individually. To change the game requires supplementing our efforts by sharing resources and intelligence between cyber security services, businesses and government to implement monitoring and counter measures at a nationwide level.

Trends impacting enterprise business environment

Whether it is social, cloud computing or mobility; technology has given us incredible tools to enable our employee population to spend more of their time on customer facing activities and value creation for our business. The key is to package these together with our business information environment to deliver an intuitive and productive experience for our employees. Being a highly global business, we must provide our workforce with secure access to our business information at any time, from any place and utilizing any device. This has significant impact to the way that we architect and manage our computer environment today.

Changing Role of CIOs

In my four years as CIO at Emerson, the role has moved from a heavy focus on our IT service delivery to one that is more engaged with the business and focused on the initiatives that enable the execution of our business strategy.

As our customers demand a better digital experience and our customer solutions become more software and information based, we are seeing increasing overlap and integration of our IT organization with marketing, engineering and product development. It is requiring our IT teams to gain a deeper understanding of our customers and our business and the functional organizations to gain a deeper understanding of technology. This blending of our organization and competencies is a very positive trend.
